Hamish was a career civil servant who headed a number of Scottish departments before devolution and was the first Head of the Scottish Executive's Justice Department. He has wide experience of appointments to senior positions in Government, non-departmental public bodies, the NHS and the judiciary.
He is Chairman of the Fire Service Research and Training Trust, a member of the Scottish Records Advisory Council and a non-executive director of the Social Work Inspection Agency.
Hamish stepped down as a Commissioner in April 2007.
